Sometimes, changing a student’s future starts with a simple question.
A few years ago, during a conversation between Caldwell Parish educators and engineering partners supporting Strategic Biofuels’ Louisiana Green Fuels project, someone asked: “What does your STEM program look like?”
The answer was simple: “There wasn’t one.”
Like many rural school districts, Caldwell Parish had talented students and dedicated teachers, but limited resources. The funding required to launch robotics, engineering and technology programs simply wasn’t available.
That’s when Strategic Biofuels and its partners stepped in.
Through support from engineering firm Hatch and connections created through the Louisiana Green Fuels project, Caldwell Parish received funding to launch its first robotics program. What began with a $10,000 investment quickly became something much bigger.
Today, students are designing and building robots, learning coding and 3D modeling, and developing skills that extend far beyond the classroom. In just a few years, the program has grown from non-existent to nationally competitive.
Caldwell Parish robotics teams have advanced through local, regional and national competitions and even earned the opportunity to compete on the world stage.
For many students, robotics has opened doors they never knew existed. It has introduced them to careers in engineering, technology and computer science while building confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
The program has also helped transform what’s possible for students in a rural community.
What started as a single conversation is now creating opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom. Students who may never have considered careers in STEM are now pursuing college degrees in technology-related fields and exploring pathways that once felt out of reach.
The story of Caldwell Parish’s robotics program isn’t really about robots.
It’s about possibility.
It’s about giving students access to experiences, skills and opportunities they might not otherwise have. It’s about helping young people discover talents they didn’t know they had and imagine futures they hadn’t yet considered.
By investing in education and workforce development, Strategic Biofuels is helping create lasting impact in the communities it serves, one student, one opportunity and one future at a time.
