A New Carbon Cycle: From Louisiana Forests to Reliable Power

October 20, 2026

Back to News

Louisiana’s working forests play an important role in capturing carbon, supporting rural economies and supplying renewable resources. The proposed Louisiana Green Fuels project is designed to extend that value by turning sustainably sourced forestry residuals into reliable power while capturing and permanently storing the resulting carbon dioxide.

Giving Forestry Residuals a New Purpose

Forestry operations generate materials such as forest thinnings and sawmill residuals that can have limited market value. Louisiana Green Fuels would use these resources to generate renewable electricity, creating new demand for Louisiana forest products while supporting forest health and the communities that depend on the forestry industry.

Completing the Carbon Cycle

As forests grow, they naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Louisiana Green Fuels would use residual materials from those forests to produce reliable power, capture the carbon dioxide generated during that process and permanently store it in a deep geologic formation beneath the project site.

Bringing biomass power generation, carbon capture and permanent geologic storage together at one location creates an integrated model for producing carbon-negative energy. It also demonstrates how Louisiana’s forestry resources, workforce and geology can work together to support growing demand for reliable, lower-carbon power.

Louisiana Green Fuels is designed to create benefits that reach beyond energy production, including new markets for forestry residuals, opportunities for rural communities and a scalable platform for permanent carbon management.
